On-line Control of Magnesium Hydroxide Dosing for Sulfide Mitigation in Sewers

چکیده
Magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) is commonly dosed in sewer systems to control corrosion and odour problems by preventing sulfide transfer from the liquid to the gas phase. Current dosing practices do not take the dynamics of sewage flow and sulfide production into consideration. This paper presents the development of an on-line control methodology for the optimised dosing of Mg(OH)2, based on pH measurement and the wastewater buffer capacity. Sewage acidification due to fermentative processes is also taken into consideration. Simulation results showed an improved pH control with reduced chemical consumption.

Chemical dosing for sulfide control in Australia: An industry survey.
Controlling sulfide (H(2)S) production and emission in sewer systems is critical due to the corrosion and malodour problems that sulfide causes. Chemical dosing is one of the most commonly used measures to mitigate these problems. Many chemicals have been reported to be effective for sulfide control, but the extent of success varies between chemicals and is also dependent on how they are applie...
متن کاملControlling chemical dosing for sulfide mitigation in sewer networks using a hybrid automata control strategy.
Chemicals such as magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2) and iron salts are widely used to control sulfide-induced corrosion in sewer networks composed of interconnected sewer pipe lines and pumping stations. Chemical dosing control is usually non-automatic and based on experience, thus often resulting in sewage reaching the discharge point receiving inadequate or even no chemical dosing. Moreover, inte...
متن کاملIntegrated modelling of biotransformation processes in sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants for optimising chemical dosing to sewer networks
Hydrogen sulfide, which is produced by sewer biofilms as a result of sulfate reduction under anaerobic conditions, has since long been identified as a major cause of corrosion and odour problems in a sewer system. Dosing of various types of chemicals to wastewater is widely used by the water industry as a control measure for these problems. Oxygen/air, nitrate salts, iron salts and magnesium hy...

Free nitrous acid (FNA) was previously demonstrated to be biocidal to anaerobic sewer biofilms. The intermittent dosing of FNA as a measure for controlling sulfide and methane productions in sewers is investigated. The impact of three key operational parameters namely the dosing concentration, dosing duration and dosing interval on the suppression and subsequent recovery of sulfide and methane ...

The Woodman Point Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Western Australia has experienced two separate problems causing avoidable maintenance costs: the build-up of massive struvite (MgNH4PO4. 6H2O) scaling downstream of the anaerobic digester and the formation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) levels in the digester gas to levels that compromised gas engine operation and caused high operating costs on ...
